Closing of Cityfresh Supermarket makes Harlem even more of a food desert

Harlem is known for being a ‘food desert’ – and with increasing prices, it’s getting even more difficult for residents to find affordable, healthy food. People in East Harlem used to do their grocery shopping at the big City Fresh supermarket near 116th and Lexington Avenue. The closure of this supermarket a few months ago came as a big blow to the local community. This summer I went and spoke to Jose Perez, who is directly affected by this.
